I will be joining a group of prominent bloggers for a short trip to the lovely region of the Aveyron, in France for the period 1-3 October, 2014. This is the organised by Tourisme Aveyron in association with Magellan PR, and is the same area as my first ever press trip in 2011, so returning will be bring back some fond memories.
There are many historical, and pretty villages to visit, with picturesque churches, town squares, and lovely countryside. There are also numerous museums, and great restaurants, so it will be a trip of culture, and cuisine. Photography is possible in most areas of interest, so watch out for some great images, and plenty of stories arising from our short hop across to the Aveyron.
The itinerary looks very interesting, and it will be possible to follow the adventure on Twitter, and Instagram using the hashtag #InAveyron. Please do join us there.
PM – All participants will arrive at Rodez Airport from various locations before zooming off to Belcastel.
We will then spend the rest of the day visiting the village and castle of Belcastel. Officially classified as one of the most beautiful villages of France, we will tour the castle, and church which houses the tomb of Alzias de SAUHNAC. There will be further opportunities to explore, including its pretty bridge, and other historical monuments.
We will overnight at the Hotel LES FLEURINES 17 boulevard Haute Guyenne 12200 Villefranche-de-Rouergue
Thursday 2nd October
Breakfast at the hotel, before packing and leaving our luggage with reception, providing a chance to wander around the market of Villefranche de Rouergue, and the Bastide.
Villefranche-de-Rouergue was founded in 1252 by Alphonse de Poitiers, Count of Toulouse and brother to the king Saint Louis. The town was constructed on a grand scale typical of the time in a quadrille shape surrounding the main square which was the centre of religious and public life.
Lunch at L’Epicurien in Villefranche de Rouergue
We will then follow this with a visit to the Abbey in Conques. This is a jewel in the Romanesque architectural world and was a popular stop for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. It has the most marvellous sculptural tympanum of the Last Judgement that is renowned throughout the art world. It was one of the most important spiritualist centres in the Western world. It was badly damaged during the religious wars and abandoned after the Revolution then luckily rediscovered by Prosper Mérimée in 1837 when he was inspector general of Historic Monuments. He realised how exceptional the Abbey was and made sure funds were released to pay for its restoration. This took a century to achieve and was completed in 2000. A welcome addition to the Abbey were the stained glass windows designed by world-renowned and local artist Pierre Soulages.
Further information is available from the Office de Tourisme, CONQUES
Evening – Leave for Rodez, and check in for an overnight at the Hôtel LA TOUR MAJE 1 Boulevard Gally, 12000 Rodez
20.00 Dinner in Le Coq de la Place in Rodez.
Friday 3rd October
Breakfast in the hotel, before a tour of the town. This will include, the medieval streets of Rodez, the fifteenth century Canoniale house, and the sixteenth century houses of l’Annonciation and d’Armagnac. It should provide plenty of Kodak moments to share. We will also visit the Cathédral of Notre-Dame (thirteenth – sixteenth centuries)
The museum was gifted to Rodez by Pierre et Colette Soulages in 2005, one of the most generous donations from any living artist in the world valued at more than 35 million euros and incorporating 500 of his works. Wow, that’s pretty generous!
Lunch in the café Bras in the museum featuring the cuisine of Michel et Sébastien Bras, great French chefs that have three Michelin stars for their restaurant at Laguiole. Here they present an alternative cuisine called «bistronomie».
Unfortunately this will bring our short trip to the Aveyron to an end, and we will all depart for home, or other destinations. Don’t forget the hashtag #inAveyron, see you on Twitter, and Instagram.
