Adventure in the Catalan Pyrenees – Itinerary

Returning to a destination can often be very exciting, and that is how I feel about heading to Pirineu de Girona over the period 3rd – 7th February, 2014. I was last there nearly two years ago, it was an exciting trip organised by the Costa Brava Tourism Board. They are a great team, I departed having made new friends, and I’m looking forward to renewing friendships in a beautiful part of Catalonia.

This time round is a different season, and although a few activities are repeated, it promises a totally different experience. The itinerary looks amazing, and should be great fun to follow on Twitter, and Instagram using the hashtag #InPyrenees.

Monday 3rd February

I’ll arrive in Barcelona in the afternoon, meeting our contact Anna Barceló, and the rest of the group. After being welcomed by the Patronat staff, we’ll transfer to la Molina, with accommodation provided be Solineu Hotels.

Evening – A night skiing torchlight descent in la Molina, which will be great fun as I’ve not been night skiing in many years, and on a recent trip had mentioned how much fun skiing at night is.

Tuesday 4th February

Breakfast in the hotel

We’ll be skiing in all day in the resorts of la Molina and Masella, which is a pretty cool way to start any trip. The twinned resorts make up the Alp 2500 resort, so named due to the surrounding mountains of that altitude. Conveniently located, they are the nearest ski villages to the main cities of Catalonia, and much of Spain.

Lunch in la Masella

Evening – Visiting nearby Puigcerdà for some free time spent in retail therapy, probably not likely to be my favourite evening of the trip. We will also visit the Llívia Pharmacy, one of the oldest in Europe, perhaps a little more interesting. I’m certainly looking forward to returning to this island village, which is a bit of Catalan Pyrenees surrounded by France.

Not sure we’ll be doing much of this

am – Transfer to Ribes de Freser, followed by a transfer to Vall de Núria in a lounge car, a journey into the past. This was one of the highlights of the last visit to Costa Brava, and it should look entirely different in it’s winter livery this time around. Located in the eastern Pyrenees, a unique landscape of natural beauty. It is one of the highest points of the Ribes Valley, and is surrounded by 3,000 metre
peak.

Lunch in Hotel Vall de Núria

pm – We’ll be trying trekking in snowshoes, which I’m very excited about, as it’s an activity I’ve never tried. Have to admit my lack of fitness is a cause for concern though.

Evening – Transfer back to Ribes de Freser, where we will check-in to our accommodation, the Resguard del Vents Hotel

Dinner in Els Caçadors Restaurant, with a gin and tonic tasting session, after all we’ll need some refreshment after a tough day travelling, and snowshoeing.

Thursday 6th February

Breakfast in the hotel

am – Travel to Setcases to meet our guides Marc Pinsach, Nil and Oriol Cardona for a day of ski mountaineering at the Vallter2000 Ski Resort. These are the 3 best ski mountaineers and trailrunners in Spain, it’ll be quite some experience meeting them.

Lunch in Pont Nou Restaurant in Camprodon, followed by exploring the town, which became a settlement in 1118, a market place for the nearby Sant Pere monastery. It was designated a royal city since 1252.

We will then transfer to volcanic region of la Garrotxa, where we’ll check-in, and enjoy dinner in La Rectoria de Sant Miquel, at Veïnat de Sant Miquel de Pineda

Friday 7th February

Breakfast in the hotel

am – An early morning hot-air balloon flight over la Garrotxa, with Vol de Coloms which will be a treat. I’ve already experienced how great a flight over the region is, and really looking forward to seeing how different it appears in winter.

pm – Transfer to Barcelona airport, for departure to Manchester.
