I am really excited to be leaving for Chamonix tomorrow, some skiing and hopefully other winter activities in one of the mountain sports capitals of the world. It is many years since I last visited, seeing Mont Blanc again will be like visiting an old friend. It’s also a few years since the chance for some skiing presented itself.
The duration of the trip is 8-12th February, 2013 and the snow conditions are forecast as excellent, so a great trip is on the cards. The Rhone-Alpes Tourisme and Chamonix Mont Blanc have done an amazing job providing a great itinerary. The accommodation appears great and apart from the skiing there should be some opportunities to enjoy some other winter sports.
I am travelling alone so plenty of prospect for finding my own adventures which you can follow on Twitter using the #InRhoneAlpes hashtag.
Friday February 8th
Arrival at Geneva airport, flying with Easy Jet and shuttle transfer with Mountain Drop Off to the accommodation in Chamonix.
Check-in at: Chalet Les Mazots My Collineige contact in Chamonix will be Sarah Jane.
Accommodation includes continental breakfast, afternoon tea and a 4-course dinner with wine on Friday night. There is a CD player, TV and DVD player in the
chalet, should for music or DVDs. A WiFi connection is also available. That’ll do me nicely!
Dinner – Chalet Les Mazots
Saturday February 9th
All day – Mont-Blanc ski Discovery – they will be collecting me directly from the Mazots and will meet my guide/instructor Alex from the ESF. Further details will be confirmed Friday evening. The kind people will even provide me with lunch on the slopes one of the days I’m staying.
Dinner – with Claire Burnet from Chamonix Tourist Office at the Café de l’Arve
Overnight in Chalet Les Mazots
Sunday February 10th
Am Check-out. As I will be spending the next 2 nights at the Grand Hôtel des Alpes 4****
The Grand Hotel des Alpes is located in the pedestrian precinct of Chamonix. My host is Katia Saggia. The accommodation is B&B, but there are a number of excellent restaurants in the vicinity.
The itinerary for Sunday 11th and Monday the 12th is weather dependent. Whichever day the conditions are best I’ll be zooming down the awesome Valley Blanche wishing I had a Go-Pro. If the conditions are as good as hoped then both days maybe spent there.
There are plans to include some other activities and a trip to the top of the cable car system is likely for some photographs of the stunning views over the Alps and to Mont Blanc.
I will be dining in the Grand Hotel des Alpes on both evenings.
Tuesday February 12th
Currently planned for a free morning before a transfer with Mountain Drop Off from the hotel to Geneva airport.
This is going to be a great trip, having an itinerary which isn’t over packed with activities is really liberating as it will allow more time to do my own thing. I do hope you will follow on #InRhoneAlpes even if it’s just for the likely regular updates from the Chamonix apres-ski scene too.
