Postcards from Agios Nikolaos, Crete – Harbour of Peace

The purpose of a boat is to cruise, even small vessels, it maybe just a quick tour around a local lake but this is what they are designed for. However when moored they can present a portrait of peace.

Placid lake, tranquil shores

If moored in an idyllic location like Lake Voulismeni in Agios Nikolaos, Crete it can provide a picture perfect scene. Known simply as the lake by the locals, sheltered by the high surrounding cliffs it appears like a mill pond. barely a ripple.

It is lined by dozens of restaurants and tavernas offering Greek coffee, seafood dishes and other Cretan specialities such as Apáki which is pork fried with saffron and ouzo. It is probably due to to the time of year but the resort is quiet and the lake is the perfect place to find a tranquil moment.

It is a pleasant walk around the small lake, there is not any reason to rush and there are plenty of spots to sit and enjoy some inner peace. Most other people seem to understand this need for silence and the only  disturbance is likely to be from the numerous cats that stalk the shores.

The best view is from the small park which overlooks the lake, there is a small café making it  another great spot to pause a moment maybe over a coffee or glass of wine.

The lake is the source of a number of myths, including it’s lack of a bottom. In 1956 after an eruption on nearby Santorini dead fish were found floating in the lake leading to the assumption it is somehow connected and communicates with the volcano.

I visited the lake and café on the high ground above it several times and rarely did any of the boats seem to move. They must do as there always seemed to be a small vessel leaving or departing through the nearby harbour.

Doing some research online regarding the lake I even found an image which seemed to be an exact replica of one of my images. The same boats moored in exactly the same position perhaps these vessles are merely pretty ornaments of the resort.

This fortunately seems unlikely, as attractive as they may appear it would be a shame if they never serve their purpose.

I have always found walks by a lake to be relaxing moments. It seems like it would be a fantastic experience if that walk took place in Crete. Perhaps one day I’ll make it to the Mediterranean.
