First impressions are not always accurate ones. Initially there may not seem there is much to do on the small island of Ammouliani, in Greece just off the coast of Halkidiki near Ouranoupolis. It requires a short ferry ride from the mainland and tourists are greeted by a typical small Greek resort.
The town has several hotels, restaurants and taverns some of which are right on the harbour area. My group bypassed these however and stopped at a hotel off the main street. We were well cared for with an excellent meal of grilled meats and kebabs, with fresh green salads and decent wine, exactly what might be expected from Greece.
The island is also blessed with beautiful beaches however, tucked away in secluded coves or with beachside taverns to provide refreshments it was a shame that the early spring weather was not warmer. They are all within a short drive or even a walk of the town and allthough at this time they were quiet it is easy to imagine them with many more visitors once the summer really kicks in.
This must be the reason for the dancing which the local women seem to enjoy so much. Forming long lines, large circles or smaller rings they present a joyeous spectacle with their colourful costumes and smiling faces. Living on Ammouliani must provide a pleasant way of life and good life balance as it couldn’t just be our visit which prompted the dancing.
It is probably not suited to adrenalin junkies or those seeking colourful nightlife but for those capable of finding adventure in more sedate activities or wishing a good destination for relaxing it seems perfect. Especially when it is only a short ferry ride from the coast of Halkidiki, providing opportunities to explore and then retreat back to the peace and quiet of the island.
No wonder they are dancing, I might even be tempted to put on my dancing shoes if this was my home; though it might become even quieter there if I did.
