Postcard from a glacial lake in a Catalonian Park

It takes a couple of hours of steady trail climbing in the Estany de Sant Maurici National Park to reach this glacial lake at 2100m.

It is a interesting trek with the spectacular scenery of the Pyrenees mountains to take the strain out of the steepest sections. There is always a chance of seeing some indigenous animals such as the chamois, marmots, roe deer or even ermines. If you are extremely lucky it is possible to catch a glimpse of lammergeirs or golden eagles.

A still semi-frozen Glacier Lake

There is a fast flowing and powerful river flowing from the lake, the glacial meltwater driving plenty of water down the valley even forming an impressive waterfall which even from several metres away will soak observers. The cold air causes the fine mist to freeze on the trunks of the nearby trees, just demonstrating just how cold it is.

At this height even in late may there is still snow clinging stubbornly to the hollows and places hidden from the thawing heat of the sun. A large portion of the lake as can be seen in the picture is still covered in ice.

The walk back takes about half the time but the whole trek should leave any visitor with a renewed appreciation of the beauty of mountains.
