Postcard from Marrakech Medina

Marrakech is a busy city, there always seems to be something going on. tourists mingle with the performers in the main square Djemaa el Fna and with stallholders in the souks which surround it.

It was the donkeys however that struck me most, they seemed to be the hardest working of all those making their living in and around the medina.

Almost without exception everytime I saw one it appeared to be towing a heavy cart or carrying a wearisome load. They are used to transport all manner of goods for selling or possibly for moving goods for other merchants. Even when I found one simply tethered to a post it seemed tired and forlorn, as if carrying the weight of the world.

It is the culture of Morocco and North Africa however, donkeys or mules are not pets, they are working animals and genuine beasts of burden which are essential to their owners for making their living.

I found myself just hoping that they at least got a good meal each evening and hopefully a peaceful retirement plan when they became too frail to work.
